Russell Sarre

Russell Sarre is a composer, a husband, a father, a son, a musician and my friend, he would tell you… he is a man. A man who does not trundle aimlessly through unaware of his contribution or his place, he lives consciously with a great appreciation of his life and of those in it. Russell tells me he has won the lottery ticket, that we all have and with this comes opportunity, the only thing limiting our experience here on planet earth is that which our minds can not imagine. After all… we are all composed of star dust…it is scientific fact!
The first time I had seen Russell for many years we met in London. Over coffee we swapped updated bios, “would you like to go for a walk?” Walk!… I have a fast gait but I had to be mistress quickly to keep up as we ran through the National Gallery to his Lady Jane Grey (where he lovingly described to me the symbolism and mastery of the painter), past the lions roaring in Trafalgar Square and finally sat down, after a brisk sojourn around the Thames, to a pub lunch and pint at the Sherlock Holmes. Whipping out his not so smart phone, (an old Nokia he will not part with) Russell texts a friend to announce his arrival, (a tradition he keeps between two Sherlock enthusiasts each time he sets foot in the establishment)
Originally from Western Australia Russell has lived in London, Germany and the United States with his beautiful anonymous Frau (as he affectionately calls his wife) and their three vivacious children. Currently composing an Opera, the classical guitarist who picked up the stick seems to be enjoying orchestration both musical and visceral…

Why do you compose?
Power… authority, standing and commanding the actions of ninety other human beings is exhilarating!
What is your favourite city and why?
London… I do not know why…the energy, the feeling. Piccadilly Circus, Times Square, Trafalgar Square.
You look around and people are on the trip of a lifetime.
How does it make you feel?
I just feel… Jubilant! Wonderful! I always feel so alive and happy landing in London.
I feel like almost anything could be done here.
Something important you learnt which steers you?
Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?
What are you compelled to do?
Protect children and vulnerable people.
If you could change something in society what would it be?
Violence against children and suffering.
What is the same about you or true when you were ten, that is still true?
I don’t believe I am good enough.
And what is different ?
I know how to deal with it and I realise it’s my own perception, what other people see in me.
So now I have faith and I just do it…
Describe these four words…
Love
Something for children. Varying degrees. Is used for things it does not belong including gratitude and infatuation and as a synonym for for self sacrifice. Taking a bullet is self sacrificing.
Passion
Same thing. Feeling for something that is a driving force.
Indifference
Not sure if someone really is indifferent to something. Carelessness, not caring perhaps.
